We have been planning this hike for a long time. We've been dehydrating some foods and getting all our equipment for this trip. Can't believe that we're just about ready to get going!

We will be leaving home on March 18th and driving out east. We'll make a couple stops along the way to relax and enjoy our last days of luxury (sleeping in beds and eating at a table!). We'll be stopping to visit with Dan's youngest sister and her family for Easter in Arkansas. We'll arrive in Virginia and stay with one of my brothers and his wife to get ourselves ready to begin our hike. We plan on beginning our hike March 30th or 31st!

Sept 2007 backpack trip with our daughters
Trail Lingo
AT-The Appalachian Trail
AYCE-all you can eat restaurants
Blaze (white blaze)-the marking on trees, rocks that we follow that keeps us on the right path
bounce box-box that we mail to ourselves along the trail that has our "town clothes", shower stuff and other stuff we might need in towns
Double blaze-tells us there is a change in direction in the trail or a switchback
Flip-flop thru-hiker-hiker doing the whole trail but not in straight shot north to south or south to north (that's us)
hiker box-box at hostels that hikers can unload stuff they don't want/need for other hikers to take
hiker shuffle-the first couple seconds/minute first thing in the morning or after sitting; tend to hobble or limp a bit at first
hitching-hitch-hiking (using your thumb) or asking for a hitch/ride-helps keep extra miles off your feet when getting into or around towns
Katahdin, ME-northern terminus of the AT
leapfrogging-when hikers bypass each other (same persons); sometimes through the day or days
nero day-a near zero day; short hiking day
NoBo-hiker going northbound
resupply-going into town to get food and other necessities or a box that is mailed to you with these things (James is mailing our boxes that we put together)
section hiker-hiker doing just parts of the trail over a number of years
slack packing-hiking a day or so without the big backpack, just using maybe a day pack; a must at Katahdin in ME
snot rockets-blowing your nose out onto the ground (Hey Jenn-I've gone to a snot rag much to my dismay, but I ran out of kleenex only after 2 or 3 days! I can't do the snot rockets.)
SoBo-hiker going southbound
Springer, GA-the southern terminus of the AT
switchbacks-like a hairpin turn on the trail, helps cut down on the steepness of the trail/climbs
Thru-hiker-hiker doing the whole trail in one shot
Trail Angel-people who do things for hikers on the trail
Trail Magic-when people leave treats for hikers to find, usually near towns
Zero day-no mileage hiking day; a day off of hiking

We're so excited that you're coming to visit us on your way back east. The kids are anxious to get accquainted with you! Best of luck getting everything prepared, and we're proud of you for starting this adventure!

Hey Deb and Dan,
Well, it’s been a week since we dropped you off at the Charlottesville bus depot. That was a very exciting car ride from Springfield to Charlottesville. We’ve never made that trip under 2 hours before. It’s a good thing we did because absolutely no one transferred from the bus that we were racing to the bus you boarded for Marion. Its been raining most of this week -- hope the weather clears and warms up for you soon. We drove down to Washington VA yesterday. Don’t know how close we were to the AT but we waved to you just in case. Hope you guys are having a wonderful time! See you soon. Love Cathy and Joey.
